NEWdawn- We hosted a Winter Night Shelter in a global pandemic!
Wow, what a year it has been for everyone! With COVID-19 hitting the UK just at the end of our 2019/2020 shelter season and throughout this past year as we have been in and out (but mostly in) lockdown, we seem to be coming out the other side and its proving a wonderful time to pause and reflect. We want to begin by thanking all those who were involved in NEWdawn at the Good Hotel this year, who helped make hosting a night shelter in a global pandemic possible. We could not have done it without you.
This year, in our time of trouble, God made a way for us to host 24 guests in a beautiful local hotel. They were offered support in multiple ways: they had breakfast, lunch and dinner, a wrap-around advocacy support from our NEWday team, they received their own room and space to stay in 24 hours a day when needed. We were able to offer this over the coldest months of the year and we ran from early December 2020 all the way through to March 2021 (a massive thank you to Crisis at Christmas who hosted our guests for 2 weeks at Christmas). Out of our 24 guests, 21 moved on into positive and stable move-on options including privately rented properties, local hostels which offer floating support and some guests were even helped to return home.
“I was accommodated in a night shelter at the Good Hotel…even though it was initially for 28 days, I was there for a little more than 2 months. At the time in the hotel, I met more people with different stories from around the globe. We were provided individual rooms with attached bathrooms. NEWdawn made sure that we got 3 meals and a friend from NEWday was at the hotel on weekdays from morning to noon. They made sure that we never felt bored or stressed during our stay there.”
“I had great help from NEWdawn. A cold London January turned into a warm and friendly Good Hotel stay. Helping hands were always there for me, I was using crutches at the time and still received help. Hot meals in the evening were superb and friendly staff made me feel at home. Thanking all the people who helped me out when I was homeless and gave me a place to start my life again. From the bottom of my heart I say to all at NEWdawn THANK YOU.”
